NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program
URS Corporation (NY State) | December 2013 – April 2014
Project Highlights
- Public outreach award winner: Best Inclusion of Vulnerable Populations
- Developed projects through community input
Following Superstorm Sandy, New York State developed a community-driven planning program to create reconstruction plans to provide rebuilding and revitalization assistance to each impacted community. Jamie Caplan Consulting worked with Gerritsen Beach and Sheepshead Bay as well as the Southern Brooklyn Peninsula.
Reconstruction plans were developed in each community that considered damage, future threats to key assets and the community’s economic future. Plans were consistent with the National Disaster Recovery Framework. Each reconstruction plan considered the needs, risks and opportunities related to assets in the following recovery support function categories: Community Planning and Capacity Building, Economic Development, Health and Social Services, Housing, Infrastructure and Natural and Cultural Resources.
JCC participated as a Public Outreach Liaison in each community. This included developing and implementing an extensive public engagement strategy that included three public engagement events for each community and twelve planning committee meetings for each community. The Southern Brooklyn Peninsula won an award from NY Rising for “Best Inclusion of Vulnerable Populations.”JCC was the lead author for the Southern Brooklyn Peninsula Plan.
